Body mass index is a quick screening number
BMI stands for body mass index. It is a simple calculation that uses your height and weight to estimate whether you are underweight, at a healthy weight, overweight, or obese. Doctors and pharmacists use it as a starting point when discussing weight management options, including GLP-1 medications.
Because BMI does not measure body fat directly, it is only one piece of the picture. Your prescriber will also look at your waist circumference, medical history, current medications, and overall health before recommending treatment.
BMI = (weight in lb / height in in²) × 703BMI = weight in kg / (height in m)²Our BMI calculator above does the math automatically. Just pick your units and enter your numbers.

Why BMI matters for Wegovy, Zepbound, Ozempic and Mounjaro
FDA labeling for chronic weight-management medicines generally requires one of the following:
- BMI of 30 or higher - obesity category, regardless of other conditions.
- BMI of 27 or higher plus a weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, or heart disease.
If your BMI calculator result falls into either group, you may be a candidate for GLP-1 weight-loss medication. Your prescriber makes the final decision based on your full health picture.
